Mymensingh becomes city corporation

Mymensingh becomes city corporation

National Implementation Committee for Administrative Reorganization-Reform (NICAR) has approved a local government ministry’s proposal to recognise the Mymensingh municipality as country’s 12th city corporation. The approval came from a NICAR meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in Prime Minister’s office on Monday (Apr 2). After the meeting, cabinet division secretary (Coordination and Renovation) NM Ziaul Alam briefed reporters, local media reports said.

Earlier in 2015, Mymensingh was recognized as country’s 8th division with Netrakona, Mymensingh, Jamalpur and Sherpur divisions.

English spellings of 5 districts changed

The English spelling of five districts have been changed to make them sound more similar to their respective Bangla pronunciation. The approval came from a National Implementation Committee for Administrative Reorganisation-Reform (NICAR) meeting on Monday (Apr 2). The meeting headed by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was held at the PM’s office. Later, Cabinet Division secretary of co-ordination and reforms NM Ziaul Alam briefed reporters.

According to the new spellings, Chittagong changed to Chattogram, Barisal to Barishal, Comilla to Cumilla, Jessore to Jashore and Bogra to Bogura. Similar spelling change has been made in 2000 when ‘Nawabganj’ was changed to ‘Chapai Nawabganj’.

The secretary said some of these English spelling were given during the British period. The cabinet will consider if such spelling change is proposed.
