BNP again wants to hold 'rally' in Dhaka

Bangladesh Nationalist Party has announced to stage demonstratio in Dhaka and every district towns across the country demanding unconditional release of its chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia who is currently in jail. Moreover, the party will also hold a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka on Mar 29. BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir made the announcements at a press briefing in city’s Naya Paltan party office on Monday (Mar 19). Senior BNP leaders were also present at the press conference, local media reports said.

“We hope the government will take necessary steps to [allow us] hold the rally,” he told at the press briefing.

Fakhrul also said the party would stage demonstration on Mar 20 across the country.“The BNP was not given permission to hold a rally today (Mar 19). I called up Dhaka Metropolitan Police authorities several times but they did not receive my calls. A BNP team went to meet them but they were refused,” he said.

On Feb 8, the Dhaka Special Court-5 convicted the former Prime Minister and BNP chairperson and sentenced her to five years' imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case. She was then sent to old central jail at Nazimuddin Road in the city.

On Mar 12, an HC bench of Justices Enayetur Rahim and Shahidul Karim granted bail for four months to Khaleda after her lawyers filed the bail petition.

However, the Supreme Court stayed the HC bail order after the government and the Anti-corruption Commission filed petitions with the Supreme Court seeking stay on the High Court order that granted four months interim bail to Khaleda.
